Poppy Rowan is a Rainbow High character introduced in 2020 with Series 1. She is a student at Rainbow High that focuses in Music Engineering with a special interest in Art of Music.

Character Description

Poppy is the monarch of music at Rainbow High. She flutters between genres, but always comes up with something that's fresh and new. Everyone at Rainbow High looks up to her bold taste in music and creative ear for new beats. She's the go-to DJ for everything at Rainbow High, because she knows that the right music can set the vibe for the entire event.

Poppy is the social butterfly of the group, and her easy-going personality means she fits in just about everywhere — even with the ultra-fabulous A's who rule the school. She loves to take risks with her looks, and shoes are one of her favorite statement pieces. See her flaunting her hip hop vibes with unique mixes of glam and streetwear, perfect for when she's accepting her future Grammy.

Physical Appearance

Poppy is a freckled and fair-skinned teenage girl with a medium build. She has bright orange, hip-length, wavy hair streaked with hues of peach parted in the middle, offset by her large, pale sky blue eyes. Her makeup typically consists of shimmery orange eyeshadow mixed with brown and pink, winged black eyeliner, glittery highlight, and bold coral lipstick. Poppy is also noted to enjoy fashions that have "hip hop vibes" and a mix of "glam and streetwear."

In the Animated Series, Poppy's lipstick appears to be redder than her doll.

Outfits

Poppy's signature outfit consists of an orange vinyl bustier top worn over a pale orange slip dress adorned with a shimmery, sheer overlay. Over the outfit, she wears a cropped orange puffer jacket. To fit with her butterfly motif, she keeps one side of her hair partially pinned back with hair clips styled to look like monarch butterflies and knee-high statement boots decorated with an orange monarch butterfly pattern and the phrase, "FOR FLYING" written on the side.

Poppy's secondary outfit consists of a cropped, pale orange hoodie decorated with a rainbow underlining the word "RAINBOW" in shimmery gold letters across the chest. The hoodie also has white stripes containing the word "RAINBOW," repeating running down her arms. She also wears an orange vinyl miniskirt with floor-length cross-lacing running down the right side. Her shoes are orange strapped heels with a molded monarch butterfly design on the back, accessorized with shiny gold ankle socks.

In an alternate outfit, Poppy wears a tangerine hoodie with the word "RAINBOW" repeating the whole hoodie, she also wears a shiny metalic orange pencil skirt with a gold zipper and a pale orange bowline. and for her footwear she wears orange strapped heels with a molded monarch butterfly design on the back, accessorized with shiny gold ankle socks like her secondary outfit.

Poppy's runway outfit consists of an orange butterfly slip dress with alive butterflies pulling it in, and for the second version of the dress the butterflies let go and the dress becomes a long orange butterfly train dress. Her shoes consists of gold heels circling her ankle with orange butterfly accessories matching her dress.

Poppy's first Winter Break outfit consists of an orange jacket dress with the "RH" design all over it and a gold faux going down the front zipper. Additionally, there is an elastic waistband belt with a butterfly and black and with stripes at the bottom, and a fur-lined faux hoodie. She pairs this with tall white socks and orange ice skates with a butterfly on the side. She accessorizes with orange ear muffs and golden earrings. Her hair is tied up into two curly ponytails, being a lighter orange-yellow than usual. She has glittery gold eyeshadow, orange winged eyeliner, and small amounts of light pink blush, while her lips are peach.

For her second Winter Break outfit, she has a white cropped t-shirt with a gold and orange graphic in the front and a corduroy orange dress with faux silver buttons. On top of this, she wears a checkered orange and black cropped jacket with a fur collar and silver buttons and pearly orange ski boots.

As a Junior High student, Poppy wears a peach colored blouse with bows on the sleeves and butterfly winged ends. Underneath, she wears an orange cropped shirt tied at the top. She pairs with with off-white denim shorts with white socks and lace-up boots with a sunflower print all over it. She has her orange hair worn mostly down with some small braids tied across the top with two bowties. She also wears glittery gold eyeshadow with red eyeliner and semi-glossed peach lipstick.

Personality

Poppy is defined by her outgoing and laid-back personality. She's frequently described as a "social butterfly" who can get along with anyone and fit into just about any social group with ease. Her talent for music engineering works in her favor in that aspect, as she's known to be the go-to DJ at Rainbow High for parties and major events. She values her best friends above all else, though- especially Sunny Madison and Skyler Bradshaw, as they make her feel right at home.

Poppy seems to be among the most levelheaded and calm among all the main characters but can easily become distracted and absorbed in her work. She takes her craft very seriously and requires total concentration to achieve the perfect track.

Initially nervous around Poppy and everyone else, she eventually turned around and warmed to Poppy and often became playful.p

Coral is Poppy's younger sister. They sit together for most of the time.

Friends

Ruby Anderson

Like most of her runway group that isn't in her dorm, Ruby is not particularly close to Poppy, however they're still good friends and love hanging out in their group. Ruby joins in with 'Poppy's homesick gift', suggesting that she likely cares about her.

Sunny Madison

Sunny and Poppy hit off their friendship nearly instantly, with Poppy being the one to cheer her up after learning about her dorm. After they get to know each other, they both become very close friends that often hang out both together and with their fellow roommate. The two are seen together frequently, showcasing their good friendship.

Jade Hunter

While not initially together very often, Poppy and Jade are good friends that often hang out together and listen to music. Poppy even jokes around with Jade as she sarcastically told her she was going to use her shirt to "clean her mirror". Jade's bold and heroic personality also plays well with her, with Jade being the first one to try to save Poppy when she was stranded on the ice.

Skyler Bradshaw

Along with Sunny, Skyler is Poppy's closest friend. Not only are they both roommates but they also spend lots of time together and have similar calm personalities. These personalities also bounce off each other well, with Skyler's kindness mellowing Poppy, and Poppy's chillness that calms her down and gives her more confidence.

Violet Willow

While Poppy and Violet don't interact much, they are close friends and tend to work better as a group, with them having rather different but complimenting personalities. Violet wears Poppy's second sweatshirt when the girls switch accessories and outfits.

Bella Parker

Poppy and Bella were good friends when they were originally in the same runway group, with Poppy being heartbroken when Bella was expelled from Rainbow High. Poppy was however one of the girls to try to move on and continue working, but was also ecstatic to see Bella back at Rainbow High.

Amaya Raine

While she was initially unsure of Amaya, due to her being Bella's replacement, Poppy grew to appreciate Amaya as part of her runway group. That being said, they do not interact one on one much.

Avery Styles

Avery was shown to respect Poppy's musical talents, with her offering Poppy to DJ for The A's special Color Block Party. This is especially important near the beginning, before most of the girls earned all their respect. This is due to the factor that, the A's knew that they were talented first years from the very start.

Daria Roselyn

Both being music focused, Poppy and Daria get along well and have lots in common. Combining their skills, they have worked together on many music themed projects in their school, including their Radiant Week projects.

Rainbow Dream

Just like Poppy and Daria, Rainbow Dream and Poppy connect strongly with their love of music, with all five of them working together on their Radiant Week project and even earning a special reward for it.

Enemies

Holly and Laurel De'Vious

Like most of her friends Poppy didn't care for the twins, but she grew to dislike them most after they not only tricked Skyler into thinking there was a ghost but also trapping her in a room to scare her even further. They are further shown to not get a long during Radiant Week, where they disrespect Poppy after losing to her.

The Assistant

In a similar vein to the twins, Poppy strongly dislikes The Assistant due to him tricking her and her friends into thinking there was a ghost. She does turn this around however and ends up convincing him to scare the twins back for revenge. Therefore, both Poppy and The Assistant are likely on a 'positive' note.

• February 24th, 2020: Poppy's prototype doll is revealed during 2020 Toy Fair.
• June 28th, 2020: The first official stock photos of Poppy are revealed.
• July 26th, 2020: Poppy's debut doll is released as part of Series 1.
• October 2nd, 2020: Poppy makes debut in the Animated Series with the rest of the cast.

Etymology

Poppy

Poppy is a girls name derived from the flower poppy, perhaps referring to the California poppy, which is known for its orange coloration.

Rowan

Rowan is an Irish surname meaning "little red one". It is also a type of shrub that is known for growing orange fruit.

Trivia

• Her name was Poppy Harlow in the ending credits of "When the GLAM Hits The Fan", It was later confirmed that it was a writer's mistake.
• Although Poppy creates music in several different genres, her personal favorite to listen to is Pop.
• Poppy has Synesthesia, which is a neurological condition that connects senses to each other. In Poppy's instance, this means she can see what she hears, which is why she loves connecting music to art.
• Music Production runs in her family and she plans on following those footsteps.
• In the animated series, Poppy wears a golden chain necklace, a flower ring on the right and a butterfly ring on the left. She's one of the few characters to have accessories that the doll didn't include; like a necklace, bracelets or a ring.
• She had never experienced snow in real life before attending Rainbow High.
• Some of the real-world inspirations for Poppy's outfits include:
  • Her signature boots are inspired by the series of "For Walking" boots by Off-White, an Italian luxury fashion label.
  • The heeled sandals featured in her secondary outfit are inspired by designs by Sophia Webster, whose various butterfly heels have become a signature of the company.

  • Poppy's Fantastic Fashion dress is inspired by the monarch butterfly dress from Moschino Spring 2018.
• It is rumoured that Poppy did not return for the rebrand of the doll line in 2024 due to low sales compared to the other main characters, she is permanently retired and will not be receiving anymore dolls after Fantastic Fashion. However, she continued to be a main character in the animated series.
• In Season 5, her voice gets noticeably deeper for unknown reasons.
